Political intrigue. Love triangles. Pie. Everything you could ask for in a comic operetta! In this story about the thrill of competition and the joy of play, the Prime Minister of Portugal and the rabble-rousing poet Cervantes jockey for power over the throne, while the king and queen are preoccupied with affairs of the heart. Don’t miss this rarely performed gem by Johann Strauss, Jr!

In this operatic retelling of a classic fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood recounts the events of the day she went to visit her granny. Who knew the series of unfortunate events that would happen that day, including her granny kissing a wolf, Forest Ranger Dudley losing his pants, and Little Red getting in trouble. This performance is a great introduction to opera for children of all ages.

Brides and Mothers / Cox and Box
A Double Bill and WORLD PREMIERE
Wehymeyer & Pflueger / Burnand & Sullivan

Fully staged performance
November 9 & 10, 2019
Montgomery College, Silver Spring, MD

The Forgotten Opera Company (Victorian Lyric Opera’s contemporary arm) presents a double bill of Arthur Sullivan’s Cox & Box and the world premiere of a new one-act opera, Brides and Mothers, composed by D.C. native Sean Pflueger with libretto by Laura Wehrmeyer Fuentes. A relatable character study for the 21st century, Brides and Mothers looks at the complexity of mother/daughter relationships from a new angle. Sean and Laura’s previous collaboration, Do Not Disturb, was praised as “wonderfully witty.” Brides and Mothers, their third operatic collaboration, is poised to be a modern-day classic. Juxtaposing Brides’ all female cast, Arthur Sullivan’s Cox & Box provides FOC’s men the chance to shine. Doused in all the charm and humor you’ve come to expect from Sullivan’s work, this little-known gem will leave you in stitches.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved comic opera tells the story of Frederic, a boy mistakenly apprenticed to a softhearted band of pirates when his hard-of-hearing nurse is told to take him to a ship’s pilot. When his apprenticeship comes to its end, Frederic leaves the pirate ship and promptly falls in love with a Major-General’s daughter Mabel. Just as he starts planning for his future, the pirates return to inform Frederic that since his birthday falls on leap day, he still has another 63 years of apprenticeship left before he’s of age. The score features many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s wittiest and most engaging tunes, including the immortal “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" and "Poor Wand'ring One."

VLOC presents John Philip Sousa's most famous operetta El Capitan, in which Don Errico Medigua, the Spanish colonial viceroy of 16th-century Peru, fears assassination by rebels. Medigua had secretly engaged the fearsome warrior El Capitan to come to his defense, but learns that the ferocious mercenary has unfortunately died en route. Medigua then disguises himself as El Capitan, but discovers that the rebels had ALSO engaged the fighter to battle on their behalf, and are eagerly awaiting his arrival. Mayhem ensues. How many viceroys can there be? How does a viceroy acquire a wife AND a fiancee? How can one man lead two armies at the same time? A tale of mistaken identities and love triangles, El Capitan is sure to give you a laugh, and send you on your way whistling some of Sousa's finest tunes.
