About the Show

Director - Kate Huntress-Reeves
Music Director - Joseph Sorge
Choreographer - Cheryl Stafford

Head south with us to a nation rich in history, culture, and tradition. Don Medigua, viceroy of Spanish occupied Peru, has a problem. His predecessor, Luiz Cazzaro is attempting to overthrow him and retake power with the backing of an elite force of Peruvian rebels and their fearsome military commander El Capitan.  As the leader goes to more and more elaborate lengths to cling to power hilarity ensues.

Meanwhile, the Quechua Princess Taciturnez, cursed to be mute, embarks on a harrowing journey through time in order to regain a voice for herself and her people.

A rarely performed work, John Philip Sousa's El Capitan features some of the March King's most delightful music including the world-famous "El Capitan" march. You won't want to miss this one-of-a kind musical gem!

Open Roles

*All Roles Are Unpaid
Isabel - (soprano) Daughter of the new Spanish Viceroy. Romantic and tender-hearted. Rather under her mother's thumb, but secretly rebellious.

Count Verada - (tenor) Son of Spanish nobles, born in Peru. Has adopted Peru as his homeland and Peruvians as his people. Allied with Traciturnez in preventing the political situation from erupting into violence. Young, idealistic, passionate. Loves Isabel.

Pozzo - (comic tenor) Professional civil servant, timid by nature, thrust into masquerading as the new Viceroy, becomes essential to Taciturnez's campaign to prevent violence. There's a naiveté about him, but he grows into a braver person than he thought he was.

Scaramba - (bass baritone) The soldier's soldier. Recognizes almost immediately that El Capitán is a fraud, but loyal to his commander who doesn't. He loves Estrelda, his commander's daughter, who has a celebrity crush on El Capitán. Scaramba is furious with El Capitán from the beginning because of this.

Taciturnez - (speaking role) Indigenous to Peru. The lynchpin of the piece; the Spanish refer to her as a Peruvian princess. She is a powerful figure; her purpose is to prevent violence against her Quechua people. Both speaking and mute scenes. The role of Taciturnez will ideally be taken by a performer indigenous Peruvian/South American decent.

Jennie Sousa - (speaking role) Wife of John Philip Sousa. Herself a gifted musician and all-around smart cookie. The Sousas' was definitely a love match. She collaborates with Taciturnez.

Chorus - Spanish courtiers, Indigenous and Spanish insurgents against the new Spanish Viceroy, Spanish soldiers.

Standard Information and Disclosures

  • All participants must be vaccinated against COVID-19 virus (see below) and provide proof of vaccination at the first in-person VLOC interaction (your audition!).
  • All roles are open and unpaid.
  • Participation is ages 12+

Requirement for 2021-2022 participation: Vaccination against COVID-19 virus

In order to take part in VLOC in-person activities - namely our rehearsals and performances - you must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This goes for singers, members of the orchestra, backstage and build crew, and production teams - basically anyone who will be in person at any given time for any VLOC purpose.

COVID-19 is an aerosolized virus - it is spread through droplets in the air - and the CDC has determined that group singing indoors is a high-risk activity for those who are NOT vaccinated. We want everyone to stay healthy, but masking and social distancing are not feasible at rehearsals and performances. As a company, we have decided that the way we want to re-engage and move forward, is with the confidence and assurance that ALL participants ARE fully vaccinated and our collective risk is significantly lowered when doing the thing we love. (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html)

This policy does temporarily put an age requirement for participation. Currently vaccines are not available for children 12 and younger - as soon as they are, we will reevaluate - but anyone over 12 years of age is eligible and encouraged to join us this season, if you are fully vaccinated.

So to reiterate: in order to take part in Victorian Lyric Opera Company in person activities this season, you must be vaccinated against COVID-19. The collective safety of our community is paramount, and by vaccinating yourself, you are taking care of others.
