The Companies

Sponsoring Iolanthe is the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society (the only known theater group with its own law school). GG&SS was founded in 1973 at Georgetown University as an antidote to the tedium of law school. Their SRO production of Trial By Jury conclusively proved that this was more than (quoting the more serious students) "a waste of studying time." Today, GG&SS is comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and members of the community. GG&SS's upcoming productions include: Trial By Jury (September '92), Grease (November '92), and, in honor of their 20th anniversary, in March, GG&SS will present a G&S Gala - a collection of the best of Gilbert & Sullivan.

The Sudbury Savoyards was founded in 1961 by a group of Sudbury Methodists as a means of raising money for the new church buildings then under construction. The group's first production, Trial By Jury, was staged in the Parish Hall and costumed largely with choir robes. An invitation was extended to the community and throughout the 1960s,the stage in the town hall provided the setting for the annual Savoyard production. The group drew from the surrounding communities, until expansion onto the stage of the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School was necessary for the second staging of The Mikado in 1969.

The singers you will hear today in The Grand Duke are drawn from four of the five G&S performing troupes in Toronto. They are:
  • St. Anne's Music and Drama Society: The oldest G&S performing troupe in Toronto. For their 30th production (The Gondoliers - January '93), Assistant Director Laura Schatz will assume the directorial mantle from founding director, Roy Schatz.
  • North Toronto Players: second only to St. Anne's in longevity, NTP ranges from the traditional to the unusual. This year NTP will stage Herbert's The Fortune Teller.
  • Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Toronto: is celebrating its silver anniversary with its production of The Pirates of Penzance. Affiliated with the London Branch, G&SST is the only Canadian group to perform all 13 extant operas.
  • St. Pat's Players: Toronto's newest G&S troupe specializes in reviving "lost" music and obscure operas. They are currently three shows away from completing the entire Savoy canon with a repeat and will stage Canada's first Thespis in 1993.

Troupers Light Opera Company has been entertaining Connecticut audiences for the past 46 years. We have performed all of the Savoy operas many times. In fact. our production of The Gondoliers in April was the sixth Gondoliers since 1946. Our membership is 200-strong with enthusiastic participation in all facets of G&S production. We anticipate continuing the G&S tradition for at least 46 more years and are delighted to be a part of this Musical Marathon. From TLOC to VLOC -Thank you for your inspiration and great work. Victorian Lyric Opera Company, we HAIL the Poetry you have made this weekend.

Victorian Lyric Opera Company was founded in 1978 and is devoted to producing works of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, collectively or individually. It presents two G&S productions annually (except when it does three). VLOC remains faithful to a traditional, but lively. approach to the operettas. Based in Rockville, VLOC draws performers and audience members from throughout the metropolitan Washington area. Upcoming VLOC productions include Ruddigore (October '92) and Patience (April '93).
