What is the Sing Out?
The Great Gilbert and Sullivan Sing Out is a love letter to the immortal collaborative works of Sir William S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. Every five years, over the course of one weekend, Gilbert & Sullivan enthusiasts and newcomers alike gather in Rockville Maryland to sing through the complete musical scores of all thirteen of the pair's intact operettas.
The Sing Out celebrates the great American traditions of community and musical theater by inviting members of civic theater companies from around the country to come together to display their musical talent and love of the genre.

Do I have to pay when I submit my registration?
Everyone who registers must remit payment at the time of registration in order to be considered for casting. The only exception to this are accompanists, who are comped in exchange for playing at least one show, and children (age 12 & under). Registrations (with payment) for those interested in principal roles are due June 30, 2023. Registration for those only interested in singing with the chorus will remain open until the weekend of the Sing Out.
How is the Sing Out cast? When will I find out if I got the role I wanted?
The Sing Out is cast by a committee of Victorian Lyric Opera Company members, who will do their best to try to cast the roles with registrants' preferences in mind. It is possible that due to a high-volume of registrants in certain voice parts, and the popularity of certain roles, that not everyone will be given a principal role.
We are offering the opportunity to register as a "Lord High Substitute" in the case roles suddenly become available due to cancellation or illness.

Where do I get the music?
Vocal scores are not provided by VLOC. If you do not have a score, or a friend you can borrow from, you will need to procure your own before you arrive (limited stock will be available for purchase at the event). If you choose to purchase your scores, we recommend the G. Schirmer editions. However, there is no set edition used for the event. Feel free to bring whatever copy you have.
Prefer to read your music from a device or print at home? Links to free digital copies of each score can be found on The Gilbert & Sullivan Archive.

What should I wear?
There is no dress code for the event. Wear whatever you're comfortable in! Perhaps that's a Sing Out t-shirt? (Sing Out Merch coming soon).
Temperatures in the theater can vary, but with many people on stage it is likely to be warm. It's advised you dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes.

Costumes are permitted; however, they are not required. We ask that all costumes be family-friendly and culturally sensitive (ie. traditional Japanese attire/accessories will not be permitted during the reading of The Mikado). Please Note: NO WEAPONS of any kind are permitted in the theater. Leave swords, pistols, belaying pins at home.
May I take photographs/Video?
Yes! Photography is permitted. Please be respectful of the performers and participants and do not interrupt their experience while taking photos or video of performances.
Will the performances be recorded?
No. The performances will not be recorded in full. Portions may be recorded for use on the company's social media or used for future publicity. However, the full performances will not be recorded by VLOC. Participants are welcome to record the performances on their own devices. Live streaming of the event is prohibited.
Will on site registration be available?
Yes! You may register at the theater to sing in the chorus of any show on the day. To be considered for a role you must register and submit a role request form by June 30th.
I don't want to sing. Can I still come watch?
Yes! For non-participants, general admission tickets to watch the performances will be sold through the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre box office. Tickets will be available for purchase through the box office beginning Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
What can I expect to see if I come to watch?
With the exception of The Sorcerer, the operettas on stage do not contain dialogue or surtitles (The Sorcerer will be presented as a concert performance; costumes and dialogue but no sets). All performances other than “The Sorcerer” are accompanied by piano only.
Seating for all performances except The Sorcerer will be general admission and you may come and go to watch whichever performances you like.
(The joy of the Sing Out is participating! If you would like to sing along with your favorite operetta and watch a couple of others, we encourage you to register for a day pass and see what the Sing Out is all about!)

Are Children Welcome?
Kids are always welcome at VLOC! Part of our mission as a company is to educate young people about Victorian-era operetta. Children 12 & under can attend with their parents without registering them individually (just drop us a line at [email protected] to let us know you're bringing them along). For middle school/high school/college aged students, please register them using the student registration rate.

Peruse VLOC’s website for information about auditions for our 2023-2024 season which will include “De Fledermaus” and Gilbert and Sullivan's “Ruddigore” (Two fully staged performances with an orchestra. Auditions are required to participate in these shows.)
