Ruddigore resumes tomorrow and closes on Sunday! Don't miss your chance to see this hilarious show, including the subject of today's cast interview, Michael Beder, who plays Sir Despard Murgatroyd!

Name

Michael Beder

What's your role in Ruddigore?
Sir Despard Murgatroyd

When and how did you first get involved with VLOC?
This is my first show with VLOC (aside from participating in the last Sing-Out). A couple of friends I worked with in a different local theater company encouraged me to try out for Ruddigore, and I'm glad I took their advice!

When you're not performing in community theatre, what do you do? (job, hobby, family, etc.)
By day, I'm an attorney practicing communications and data privacy law.

Thanks, Michael!  If you still need tickets to one of the 4 performances left this weekend, you can buy them online here or call the F. Scott Fitzgerald box office at 240-314-8690. We'll see you there!

Ruddigore was a smash hit this past weekend!  Have you seen it yet?  Don't miss your chance to see the hilarious action (that was given two 5-star reviews!).  Today we talk with one of our long-term members, Kevin Caughlan, who has a very happy history with Ruddigore!

Name
Kevin Caughlan

What's your role in Ruddigore?
Chorus (bass)

When and how did you first get involved with VLOC?
I was invited in 1987 by then music director, Barry Morley, to sing in VLOC's production of Ruddigore. He needed a tenor, and I was, at the time, a tenor. When my daughter was 1, I sang with VLOC in Yeomen ot the Guard. That same year, my wife, Jenny, sang in VLOC's The Mikado. My daughter later sang with VLOC in Patience and Elixir of Love.

When you're not performing in community theatre, what do you do? (job, hobby, family, etc.)
I was teaching math at the high school level till 2012, when I retired. I have sung in various choruses (Montgomery County Masterworks Chorus from 1976-1981 and Rockville Chorus from 2014-present). I taught math at Sandy Spring Friends School from 1974-1983 where I was introduced to G&S Operettas by Barry Morley and have sung chorus in most of these.
I married my dancing partner from Ruddigore in 1989 and have a 33 year old autistic step-son and a 24 year old daughter. Both work at Montgomery County libraries. My daughter is also very musical, having sung with the Children's Chorus of Washington for 6 years until graduating from high school. I am now tutoring high school mathematics and enjoying my retirement.

Thanks Kevin!  If you haven't seen Ruddigore yet, you only have 3 more chances!  Get your tickets by clicking here or calling the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre box office at 240-314-8690.

It's officially Ruddigore week!  It's getting pretty exciting at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater what with a weekend full of rehearsals and moving the set into place.  We continue our series of cast interviews today with Kayla Cummings.  Thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself, Kayla!

Name
Kayla Cummings

What's your role in Ruddigore?
Bridesmaid/Chorus

When and how did you first get involved with VLOC?
I found VLOC while searching for local opera companies to audition for, trying to expand my experience outside of high school. My first opera with VLOC was Utopia, Limited. I really enjoyed performing with this group and the era of music. My second opera with VLOC was last spring's Pirates of Penzance. This was one of my favorites so far, but Ruddigore may top that.

When you're not performing in community theatre, what do you do? (job, hobby, family, etc.)
I am currently a sophomore at Suitland High School Center for the Visual & Performing Arts. I'm a member of the Concert and Chamber Choirs, studying opera. We also get to train privately with WNO members weekly through our program. I am always looking for singing competitions or plays to audition for. This year I have been accepted into The Tanglewood Institute at Boston University College of Fine Arts.

Your first chance to see Ruddigore is coming up this Thursday!  Are you as excited as we are?  Get your tickets now if you don't have them already!  Call the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater box office at 240-314-8690 or go online and buy your tickets here.  See you at one of the shows!
